why and how does hyperglycemia makes CVA worse?

where can i also find an article about hypertensive cardiovascular disease? i couldn’t find it in the library. i only found an article about hypertension in the book. is HCVD and hypertension the same?

It is a complicated process and I am not sure there is a consensus answer to your question. Here are a couple of thoughts, though. Hyperglycemia changes the way we process cholesterol and triglycerides. It increases the likelihood of forming significant plaques in the artery. Plaques are what ruptures often causing an embolic or thromboembolic blockage - causing the stroke. (80-90 percent of strokes are ischemic rather than hemorrhagic) The inflammatory process also is affected by hyperglycemia. We have observed that plaques are more irritable and therefore more likely to rupture compared with someone who did not have hyperglycemia.

Try going to "Pub Med" for scientific journal articles briefs. If the articles are too advanced or abstract for your needs, try sites like WebMD. Many hospital sites have information too. Consider visiting the Mayo clinic’s site, for instance.

Hypertension can cause complications in places other than the heart (which is what CV disease implies). It can affect the kidneys, reproductive function, eyes, stroke (brain), and the vessels themselves - aneurysms and vessel dissections for example. So hypertensive CVD implies - impaired cardiac function due to hypertension. Congestive heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy are the most common complications.

Is it too extreme to purchase a glucose meter if you have non-diabetic hypoglycemia?

I have non-diabetic hypoglycemia (not officially diagnosed). Does it seem too extreme to purchase a glucose meter to check my sugar levels? My episodes come on quickly and I would like to know what my sugar levels are before that happens.

Not at all, while the meters are cheap the test strips are not.. Why do you think your hypoglycemia does not indicate diabetes? In certain situations it can be a presenting symptom, as a high blood sugar can cause a surge of insulin causing your blood sugar to drop below normal, especially after you eat. I was thinking more about your question if you do purchase a glucometer should should check your blood sugar when you first get up and take another test in the afternoon around 3:00 pm because if there is a real problem with your blood sugar it would also show up in these tests. I suspected there was a problem with my blood sugar and I bought a glucometor. My sugar was elevated so I went and made an appointment with a dietician and joined a gym. My next appointment with by GP I told her about this and I had my blood sugar completely under control by myself. Good luck, Donna

why is it important to control the blood glucose levels?

its in connection with the importance of homeostasis in the body.why it is important for the Blood Glucose to lie in a particular range.

Homeostasis is the state in which all bodily functions work at their optimum level. A normal fasting blood sugar should b in the range of 80-110 mg/100 ml. If the blood sugar far exceeds this level, it is possible that the kidneys will become overloaded and dump excess sugar into the urine. The maintenance of sugar in normal ranges is a function of insulin as well, and also the avoidance of the consumption of too much simple sugar. It certainly is wonderful that the body controls these things automatically.

The Christmas Party - not far from reality -

FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director
TO: All Employees
DATE: December 1
RE: Annual Office Christmas Party

I’m happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take
place on December 23, starting at noon in the private function room
at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We’ll have a small band playing traditional carols. Feel free to sing
along. And don’t be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus!
A Christmas tree will be lit at 1:00 p.m. Exchange of gifts among employees can be done at that time, however,no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone’s pockets.
This gathering is only for employees! A special announcement will be made by our CEO at that time! Merry Christmas to you and your family.

RE: Holiday Party

In no way was yesterday’s memo intended to exclude our Jewish
employees. We recognize that Chanukah is an important holiday, which
often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year.
However, from now on we’re calling it our "Holiday Party." The same
policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians or
those still celebrating Reconciliation Day. There will be no
Christmas tree present. No Christmas carols sung.We will have other
types of music for your enjoyment.
Happy now?
Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous
requesting a non-drinking table… you didn’t sign your name. I’m
happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table
that reads "AA Only" you wouldn’t be anonymous anymore. How am I supposed to handle this? Somebody?
Forget about the gift exchange, no gifts are allowed since the union
members feel that $10.00 is too much money and executives believe
$10.00 is a little chintzy. NO GIFT EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED.

RE: Holiday Party

What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins
the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking
during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can
appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate
our Muslim employees’ beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off
on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package
every- thing for you to take it home in a little foil doggy baggy.
Will that work?
Meanwhile, I’ve arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms. Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with gay men, each will have their own table. Yes, there will be a flower arrangement for the gay men’s table. However, to the person asking permission to cross dress, no cross dressing allowed. We will have booster seats for short
people.
Low-fat food will be available for those on a diet. We cannot
control the salt used in the food we suggest for those people with
high blood pressure to taste first. There will be fresh fruits as
dessert for diabetics, the restaurant cannot supply "No Sugar"
desserts. Sorry! Did I miss anything?!?!?

RE: The F**king Holiday Party

Vegetarians!! I’ve had it with you people!!! We’re going to keep this
party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit
quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death," as you so
quaintly put it, and you’ll get your f**king salad bar, including
organic tomatoes. But you know, tomatoes have feelings, too. They
scream when you slice them. I’ve heard them scream. I’m hearing them
scream right NOW! I hope you all have a rotten holiday! Drive drunk
and die, you hear me?
The **** from HELL!

I’m sure I speak for all of us in wishing Patty Lewis a speedy recovery and I’ll continue to forward your cards to her. In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay.
Happy Holidays!

Star if you like??

Diabetic Diet Plans?

My boyfriend of the past 8 months is diabetic and has been for 20 years. I am not in charge of the food we eat as I do all the cooking. I try to cook as healthy as possible … but need some tips on what is good and or bad for him. I do as much low fat good as possible … I try to find sugar free recipes for cakes and cookies - but has a real hard time finding them or the ingredients … where do you shop to get these things.

He wont eat it if it is boring and I dont think it should be … there has to be some hidden secret that I dont know about … on where to find good sugar free ingredients ?

What types of diet plans do you or someone you love follow.
I just want to make sure I am helping him with his condition …

There has to be more I can do with what I feed us ?

Please any help or suggestions is REALLY needed. Thank You.

People with diabetes can eat anything they want.
Yes, there are some choices that are better than others.
It’s not the sugar to worry about, it’s the carbs. We all need carbs and they are the only thing that raises blood sugar.
Get yourself a book with nutritional information and count carbs. Ask your Bf how many carbs he should eat each meal.
You don’t need to use artificial sugar in baking. It still has the carbs and generally tastes like garbage.
If you bake cookies, he should only have a small portion of carbs with his meal to make room for the cookies.
For instance :
Baked Chicken [ 0 carbs ]
Baked potato [30 carbs ]
green beans [about 5 carbs in a 1/2 cup serving ]
2 Rolls [ 60 carbs ]
That is a bit high.
If you change the two rolls into one, he still has room for cookies.
It’s all a trade off.
Perhaps you should both go to a dietitian to learn what is best.
Good luck.

How to cope with gestational diabetes in a pregnant woman? Is there any ayurvedic medicine for that?

A pregnant woman discovers her affected by gestational diabetes during the 4th month. Apart from the changing diatery habits and light exercise, she is on daily dose of insulin before food thrice a day. Her present BS is 165. Is there any safe ayurvedic medicine by which she can cut down on insulin and also reduce blood sugar?

Please reconsider. Insulin has no side affects for the baby and is a "natural" remedy because it’s a hormone. It’s been in use for over 50 years. In contrast, many oral medications have either not been tested for pregnancy, or they have seen them cause birth defects in mice.

It’s vital that she keep those blood sugars under 130 after eating, and a slight increase in her insulin would easily take care of that 165.

Meanwhile, the consequences of uncontrolled blood sugars are serious: birth defects, increased risk of miscarriage, deterioration of the placenta, weight gain in the baby, and the baby having a blood sugar crash when born (removing the mom’s high blood sugar causes the baby to crash). You don’t want a baby that has to be in the hospital simply because it’s inconvenient to take an insulin shot.

My husband sugar is 245. We need a diet to follow to lower his diabetis. Can you suggest a good diabetic diet?

need diet to follow for diabetic to lower sugar count. It is to high. Sugar is at 245. please advise

245 is very high. I have parents that both have diabetes and what they do is they get prescription from their doctor. Ask your husband’s doctor for prescription medicine. Also, my parents don’t eat anything sweet for a while (3 or 4 days) and they check their blood sugar once more. If it gets too low, they eat a bar of chocolate and balance it out. This works perfectly for them and it should work well for your husband too. Also, tell him not to stress on things, that makes his blood pressure go up and contribute to a higher blood sugar. Good luck.
