Blood glucose level of 76, good or bad?

My mother is diabetic and I used her Blood Glucose meter this morning and it said my blood sugar level was 76. It that bad.

76 is low for most people, except if you haven’t eaten for a long time, which can lead to low BG’s.

For diabetics, that is to be considered a low BG value, that must be acted upon.

However, I know people that have a tendency to have low BG (a cousin of mine comes to mind), for whom these values can be "normal".

Before making any assumptions one way or the other, you should definitely consult with a doctor, because "normal" sugars hover around 100.

I would like to invite your mother to come join Tudiabetes.com, a growing global community for people touched by diabetes. I think she will benefit from sharing her experience with others living through the same challenges we diabetics experience every day.

how would a 21 hour fast affect a blood glucose test?

At 4:30 in the afternoon my husband had a Blood Glucose test after a 21 hour fast and working all day in construction, it was 6.2. Does this indicate he is diabetic?

Didn’t your doctor explain the results? If not, I think you better get a experts opinion.

That said, here’s my non-expert opinion; its a bit high considering but not diabetic high. I expect a normal fasting result to be more like a 4 or low 5 but if it was diabetes then it would be much higher. Possibly indicates pre-diabetes or diabetes that has been caught early. I think you should ask for a GTT to be sure as you can’t really diagnose off a fasting test.

Does anyone have any recipes for diabetic friendy and gluten free gift mixes in a jar?

I have friends with diabetes and celiac disease. either sugar free or reduced sugar recipes are appreciated.

Mixes in a jar are thoughtful and inexpensive gifts to give to anyone for any occasion. The idea is to layer dry ingredients of a cookie, cake, biscuit, muffin, beverage or other recipe decoratively in a jar and add directions of how to complete the recipe. The jar can be a mason jar or a recycled, clean mayonnaise or other large jar that has a lid and can then be decorated with fabric, ribbons, paint, etc.

I have seen these jars of mixes sell in retail stores for around $8.00! Imagine the savings if you were to make your own! A few inexpensive ingredients like flour, brown sugar, chocolate chips and a jar don’t cost very much! Gift recipients will love receiving a homemade mix from you so they can easily prepare a treat to enjoy and when they prepare the treat, they’ll be thinking of how thoughtful you are.

Mixes in a jar are excellent for gifts that need to be shipped because you don’t have to worry about baked goods getting smashed or getting stale. A mix will allow the gift recipient to freshly prepare the treat when it is craved or needed. They are also great to give to children’s teachers, neighbors and acquaintances because of the ease and money savings involved.

Peanut Butter Cookies

Empty jar of cookie mix into large mixing bowl. Thoroughly blend mix. Add:

* 1/2 cup butter, softened
* 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
* 1 egg, slightly beaten
* 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Mix until completely blended. Shape into walnut sized balls and place 2 inches apart on a parchment lined baking sheets. Press balls down with a fork. Bake at 350F degrees for 9 to 11 minutes until edges are browned. Cool 5 minutes on baking sheet then transfer to a cooling rack to finish cooling. Makes 3 dozen cookies.

Applesauce Cake in a Can

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar (Splenda)
1 1/2 cups stiff applesauce, preferably homemade,
but a good quality canned applesauce will work
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts.
1/2 cup chopped candied red and/or
green cherries (optional)

Grease and flour 4 empty Campbell soup cans. Shake out excess flour. Set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar. Stir in applesauce. Sift the flour, salt, soda, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon together. Fold into creamed shortening mixture and stir until smooth. Turn into cans, dividing evenly. Bake at 325 degrees F for approximately 45 minutes, until a wooden pick inserted in middle comes out clean.
Remove from oven and let cool about 15 minutes.
Puncture bottom of can to release cakes and cool thoroughly before wrapping in plastic wrap, then colored cellophane wrap. Makes 4 cans.

Any good recipes for a low GI diet?

Hi. I am a sufferer of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and I have read in lot’s of places to try a low GI diet as the symptoms are very alike to diabetics. I was just wondering if anyone had any nice recipes as I cannot seem to lose weight, obviously due to the PCOS and not junk food hehe. I just think it’s about time I got the weight issue under control (as all you PCOS sufferers know is a big (excuse the pun, not intended) issue as a side effect/symptom). Or maybe you can let me know if you tried the low GI diet and it worked for you. I know in America your treated alot better for it but over here in the UK it’s a case of, you have PCOS, these are the symptoms you can go on the pill if you like to see if it helps with your symptoms then left to it. So maybe if I take things in my own hands I can maybe get some of the nasty symptoms under control. Thanks alot guys and sorry if I babbled..

I tried many different way to lose my weight, but nothing worked untill I got this amazing way. It works fast and I lost my weight easy after I got right way. I lost 9 pounds in 30 days and it was so easy. If you are really serious and really want to lose weight you should have a look. You can get info from link below.

5.A young athlete is admitted to the hospital with diahreeah, vomiting, bone and joint pain, hyperglycemia an

this is from a case study, and I am not just being lazy. I have researched everywhere I know to look and cant find the answer that covers all of these symptoms. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, this can all be associated with diabetes.

Her blood sugar is high.. she has a lack of insulin, the body cannot use the glucose as energy without the insulin. She is an athlete and is active and needs some form of energy. Her body starts to break down fats for energy-the only problem is they cannot be completely broken down and release ketones into the blood. This in turn causes ketoacidosis- which can cause Nausea and Vomiting. Going long term with high blood sugar levels cause Neuropathy (damage of nerves) due to constriction of the blood vessels (some sort of injury) in the arms and legs and this causes the tingling sensation, and diarrhea. Long term with out treatment also causes Neuropathic joint disease and a degeneration of weight bearing joints, this condition also causes bone to breakdown so more calcium enters the blood, causing the bone and joint pain.

My guess is she has had diabetes for some time that has gone uncontrolled

I had some links to go along with this, but it wouldn’t let me post it with them….. ???

how can i test my diabetic dogs blood? We can’t get blood for the glucose meter?

You shouldn’t be testing your dog’s Blood Glucose at home. Only the veterinarian should be doing this. They usually get the blood from one of the veins. Your dog will definitely resent you if you pricked its skin everyday. The way your veterinarian should of told you to manage your dog diabetes at home is by testing your dog’s urine daily at home for ketones and glucose on urine test strips that should have been given to you by your vet.

what kind of supplements can help someone with hyperglycemia?

No supplement is going to solve your problem completely. Think of them only as aids (that’s why they call them supplements). What you need to do is get on a low refined carbohydrate diet, get plenty of daily exercise, and insure that you’re getting an adequate supply of nutrients from natural sources like fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid, or cut back on, man made, refined foods and high fat, meat and dairy products as much as possible.

If you still think you might want to try them, here are a few supplements that might help: Fenugreek, Gymnema Sylvestre, Banaba leaf, a half teaspoon a day of cinnamon, Nopal Cactus, Bitter Melon, Chromium*, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Vandium*.

* Use these two with caution. Excess amounts can be toxic.
