What kind of birthday cake can I make for a diabetic?

Tomorrow we’re celebrating my mom’s birthday, and I planned on making a cake, but she is diabetic. She is still only a diet regulated diabetic, so she can have small amounts of sugar, its more of a points base system depending on how many carbs and such she consumes everyday.

Anyways, I’m looking for a recipe that will be good for her. She has a horrible sweet tooth, and loves chocolate (so often I find her cheating on her diet! :p) Any ideas?

Diabetic cookie recipes?

I used to love baking cookies for my Mom and Dad. Cookies are a fun gift to give to people. However, my father, who is physically disabled, an invalid, and severely overweight, was recently diagnosed with type two diabetes. On the side, my Mom, who works, but is also overweight, was deemed "At risk" of the same thing. Now they’re both on a diabetic diet.

So, what I’d really be interested in right now are diabetic cookie recipes. I’d really love to hear about some that you all have tried and actually liked, but anything you’ve just heard of would be appreciated, too. And, if there’s any sort of chocolate chip cookie recipe that’s safe for diabetics, my Dad would be very happy. Thank you! =)

Here is a whole site of diabetic cookie recipes. I have actually made the Chocolate peppermint cookies from there. They are delicious.

CKD & Diabetic Diet Help?

I have type 2 diabetes and was recently diagnosed with CKD. I’m working with a nutritionist but was wondering if there are any good book with diet plans, recipes, etc. for a low carb, low protein, low sugar, low sodium, low fat diet?

Hello my friend,
I have been a diabetic since 1998.

This book has been a life saver for me.

The book is Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution.

Dr. Bernstein has been a type l diabetic since he was around 9 or 10. He is now over 70 years old and is actively practicing medicine.

He found out how to control his blood sugar and became a doctor at the age of around 45.

When he was first diagnosed, his life expectancy was less than 40 years of age.

Even though he is a type l diabetic, the covers both type l & ll
diabetes in his book.

He even has a cook book now, with delicious recipes, that are easy to prepare.

I hope this helps.

Which diabetic cookbook should I buy?

I am looking for a cookbook with simple -easy to find ingredients- recipes.

My dad has type 2 diabetes. He’s overweight and I need to start cooking for him so that he can lose weight and at the same time control his diabetes immediately because his doctor called and told me if his diet is not controlled he could have a heart attack.

I am thinking of buying one of these books, but I was wondering if anyone has tried any of them and knows which one is the best.

Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies by Alan L. Rubin
The Easy 4-Ingredient Diabetic Cookbook by Sally Hunt
All New Complete Step-by-Step Diabetic Cookbook

I could use recipes I find online, but it’s a hassle because I don’t have a printer and I can’t cook with my computer in the kitchen.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you for the information.

I should have mentioned my dad also has high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

I have type 2 diabetes, I also collect "Good" Diabetic cookbooks. The "All-New Complete Step- by - Step Diabetic Cookbook is really one of the "Good" ones. I own it and do recommend it

Every recipe tells the nutritional fact like: Calories,
Carbohydrates, Fats, Cholestrol ect.. Per Serving
The book also has a "Teaching Guide" to help diabetics and their famlies to learn more about their Meal Planning. The book cost me a little over $20.00
"And I use it"
Some other good diabetic cookbooks are:
"Diabetes Meals on $7 a Day or Less" By the American Diabetes Association.Cost: $12.95
You can find these books at most book stores.

"The New Soul Food Cookbook for People with Diabetes"By the American Diabetes Association
Cost:$14.95
I can always trust the American diabetes Association for good cookbooks and if I want one that’s not from them I always check it out with my
dietitian.

Diabetic recipes with tofu?

I would like to have diabetic friendly recipes that use tofu. I have never used tofu before, and I am intrested in adding it to my diet. My diet mostly consists of lean meats (turkey, chicken, shrimp), fruits, and vegetables. No pasta, no rice, no potatoes, and no breads. I’m just not sure how to cook tofu. I do make lots of vegetable soups and salads. Thanks for all your help!

Here is a link to the Mayo Clinic on how a vegetarian diet can help control diabetes.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diabetes/AN00845

Tofu is easy to use. It comes in soft to extra firm. It can be marinated in soy sauce or other sauces and baked at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes. You can use it in a zillion ways, whatever you can imagine. It can be used in salads, as a main dish, in soup, as an unsweetened dessert with pine nuts and fruits.

Here are some links to low-fat tofu recipes:

Also look in cook books at your local library for tofu, vegetarian, and diabetic recipes.

Recipe for Diabetic (type 2) Dog Food. I’m tired of this Science Diet crap rip off?

Hello.
I’m after opinions on what I can cook for my poodle who had diabetes. He HATES Science Diet W/D and from the research I’ve done on the net so do I. My vet seems oblivious to this and keeps pushing Science Diet on me, I’m tired of it, and I’m so confused as to what to feed my dog. Help??
BTW my dog is underweight, not overweight.
He’s still starving while we get insulin right

A healthy and often strict diet is an essential part of your pet’s diabetes treatment, and in some cases, a change in diet is the only necessary treatment to control blood sugar-levels. A low-carbohydrate diet, which is commonly recommended for diabetics, will help to reduce the amount of insulin your pet will need and it will help to keep blood-sugar levels stable.

Fats and proteins are more suitable as they are metabolized into blood-sugar at a slower rate than carbohydrates, thus reducing the sugar highs often experienced after meal times. The diet most often recommended for diabetic dogs is a low-fat, moderate-carb, and high-fiber diet.

Along with an appropriate diet your diabetic pet should eat at the same time each day at least twice a day, or smaller amounts at multiple intervals. Many pets have timed feedings according to their insulin shots so ask your veterinarian to advise what feeding schedule will be most appropriate.

Natural herbal remedies have shown to be successful in management of diabetes by helping to control blood sugar levels whilst preventing some of the nerve and tissue damage often associated with the condition. Natural ingredients such as Chromium picolinate, Goat’s Rue, Trigonella foenum have been shown to be highly successful in helping maintain blood-sugar levels while reducing the risks of insulin resistance.

Additional herbs can also be used to combat some of the negative effects of diabetes such as Bilberry, which works to promote eye health and Astragalus which works to increase vitality and promote a healthy immune system. Natural herbal and homeopathic remedies can be used either alone or alongside conventional treatments to help manage your pet’s diabetes.

Any good recipes for a low GI diet?

Hi. I am a sufferer of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and I have read in lot’s of places to try a low GI diet as the symptoms are very alike to diabetics. I was just wondering if anyone had any nice recipes as I cannot seem to lose weight, obviously due to the PCOS and not junk food hehe. I just think it’s about time I got the weight issue under control (as all you PCOS sufferers know is a big (excuse the pun, not intended) issue as a side effect/symptom). Or maybe you can let me know if you tried the low GI diet and it worked for you. I know in America your treated alot better for it but over here in the UK it’s a case of, you have PCOS, these are the symptoms you can go on the pill if you like to see if it helps with your symptoms then left to it. So maybe if I take things in my own hands I can maybe get some of the nasty symptoms under control. Thanks alot guys and sorry if I babbled..

I tried many different way to lose my weight, but nothing worked untill I got this amazing way. It works fast and I lost my weight easy after I got right way. I lost 9 pounds in 30 days and it was so easy. If you are really serious and really want to lose weight you should have a look. You can get info from link below.

What to do about diabetic dog and careless family members?

My mother in law’s dog was just recently diagnosed as diabetic. His blood sugar was unbelievably high!

He gets insulin shots twice a day, but when I took him to the vet today they said there was no change and they upped his insulin.

The reason, I think, is because he gets WAY too many treats, but my mother in law and the other people I live with won’t listen to me when I say he doesn’t need 50 treats a day.

He gets a treat everytime he goes outside. He gets treats for looking sad. He gets treats out of pity. He gets treats after his shots….and its not my dog so no one will listen to me when I say that its ridiculous to go through 3 packs of dog treats in a week.

Is there any way I can get them to understand that they are not helping his diabetes by feeding him high-sugar treats? Or what would be an alternative way to reward him for doing such menial tasks as peeing (its to the point now where if he doesn’t get a treat everytime he goes outside, he goes nuts)

Any recipes?

Likewise, are there any vet approved homemade diets for a diabetic dog? After reading the ingredients of his canned food I’m not so sure thats the best thing to feed him afterall….the first ingredient listed is corn, followed by soybean meal, and poultry byproduct.
The dog already went blind last year…probably from too many treats.

Oh my! Try this on them. Their dog will go blind if the insulin doesn’t start to work. Then they will have a blind and diabetic dog. If they aren’t careful with the diet, their dog can get other health issues from the immune deficiency. He can get Addisons Disease or Cushings Disease, which are very expensive to diagnose and just as difficult to treat.
We took good care of our dog and had her on a special diet. One day one of our other dogs knocked over the garbage can and she gorged on leftovers. Within 24 hours she was in the ER with acute Pancreantitis. They put her on all kinds of meds, but 24 hours after that we got a call from the vet asking us to hurry there. She was so doped up on morphine that she had no idea where she was or who we were, and she was literally screaming, and I mean SCREAMING in pain.
We put her down that day.

You can call your vet and ask him to have a blunt conversation with them about what will happen to the dog if they continue this irresponsible behavior.

Good diet and weight control are essential for the Insulin to work. If they don’t care how their dog suffers, you can always crack them in the side of the head!

Edit: Ask the vet about treats. We used slices of apple and all meat treats, such as duck or chicken breast. For food while she was still in jeopardy we cooked shedded chicken and white rice. After she was regulated on the Insulin, we switched her diet to a dog food with no fillers, by-products or preservatives. She did very well on that.
