Where can I find recipes for my daughters’ diabetic restrictions?
My 11 year old daughter is a Type-1 diabetic. She was diagnosed at age 9 and has gone through extreme medical ups and downs in the past two years. Today her doctor placed her on a restricted diet:
NO potatoes, pasta, sweets, or chips.
VERY LITTLE breads, carbs, starches.
LOTS OF veggies,
as much meat as she wants. Except fatty meats like bacon. All the foods she loves have been eliminated. Where can I find tasty, kid-friendly substitutions and recipes that will ease the transition for her?
www.dlife.com has a ton of great recipes…the best I’ve had, and they’re all lower in carbs. Click on the "Recipes" icon at the top, then you can type "kid" in the search field for kid-friendly recipes, but you’ll find all kinds of foods in there. Focus on keeping her carbs at less than 30g per meal, it will keep her BG’s much more stable.

Forget about limiting the bacon! It will not kill her like some of the other things the doctor has limited.
My Endocrinologist, head of dept at UNM Hospital, said to never get a craving for a food or you could not stay on a food plan for more than a month. He said if I wanted a piece of birthday cake at a party to have half a serving!
I avoid all root veggies, cereals, grains, milk products (except cheeses), legumes (any form of dried beans like Pinto, Navy, etc), soft sweet fruits most of the time. I do have my "cheat treats" occasionally, but only when I have good control and know what I will eat for lunch and dinner then I can have a "cheat".
I eat bacon and eggs almost every morning.
I eat mostly chef salads – baby spinach leafs, tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus, bell peppers, hardboiled eggs, nuts, diced or julienned meats and real dressing, not the sour diet junk that tastes horrid.
I also have steak, pork chops, lamb chops, etc with dinner salads.
I ask when we eat out for the kitchen to not put the potatoes or rices on my plate. If they do, we do not eat there again!
One national chain Chilis makes any burger plate into salad plate on asking and Dennys will put more salad on plate instead of potatoes. It just takes being brave and asking!
Yeah! it is tough even for a granny to live with those restrictions! But the more insulin I must inject to cover the foods I want, the fatter I get! So I have learned to live with it and so can your daughter. Yes, you will have rebellion and temper fits, but she is the one who must choose health over wishes!

Type 1 for 26 years
Did she get placed on a restricted diet because of the bad ups and downs? My daughter is 8 and type 1. We have issues of her having ups and downs, but the Doctor is never concerned with the diet and feels that she is restricted enough on the timed eating schedule. Please feel free to email me. Love to talk with other parents of type 1 children. rainorshine517@gmail.com

daughter is type 1 diabetic
I did a google for "type 1 diabetic diets". I only got more than 6 million results. There is one good idea for a start. There are many books available in book stores and in the library, not to mention tons of magazine articles. Does this help?

That diet is not appropriate for a growing child.I’ll bet this is not a pediatric endocrinologist. She needs a specialist.
She needs milk products and fruits.
She needs to see a dietitian for the best results.
An insulin pump may give her greater freedom. My daughter loves hers.Ay age 11 she will be able to deal with it.
Good luck.
