How do you experience hypoglycemia in diabetes?

besides taking too much insulin can this happen naturally? it never happend to me before but my uncle who is type 2,without insulin, had to go to the ER for severe hypoglycemia.

So i’m little confused since diabetes is "usually" high blood sugar.. correct me if i’m wrong please!

You are absolutely correct, my friend, diabetes mellitus IS about high blood glucose (sugar) levels.

Insulin is NOT the only way that a diabetic patient might experience hypoglycaemia [hypoglycemia, if you prefer the American spelling]. Certain anti-diabetes drugs (tablets) can also cause blood glucose levels to fall to the point that hypoglycaemia is experienced, as can missing meals (or being late with them), and harder than ‘normal’ amounts of exercise/work.

Does your uncle not get ‘warning signs’ when his blood glucose level is falling? (Some of these warning signs could include feeling nauseous, a jittery or nervous feeling, a rapid heartbeat, mood changes, blurred vision, and difficulty walking. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to loss of consciousness, seizures, coma, and may be fatal. He may experience some, but not all, or none of these symptoms.)

If your uncle does NOT experience any of the symptoms mentioned, it MAY be that he has become hypoglycaemia unaware. That’s something worth mentioning to his doctor though, often, there’s very little that can be done about that situation. It would mean that your uncle may need to test his blood glucose levels more frequently.

Whatever the outcome, I do hope that your uncle makes a speedy recovery.

Be well.

I had a hyperglycemia melt down am i a diabetic?

the ER doc measure my sugar blood level as 171 and took my numbness and in ability to move or control my limbs, and my racing heart as a panic attack…..

what do you think?

i think your best bet is to contact a doctor for some further testing.

yes, 171 is too high for someone without diabetes. HOWEVER…stress will always cause my blood sugar to shoot up and you were in the ER. For a panic attack. also, you don’t mention how long it had been since you had last eaten/drank something. did they have you hooked up to any sort of an IV? IV solutions can sometime contain dextrose.

Speak to your primary doc. Let him/her know that your blood sugar tested high in the ER. they can schedule you for either a fasting glucose or a glucose tolerance test.

are you haveing any of the symptoms of diabetes?
increased thirst
increased urination
unexplained weight loss

What to do about diabetic dog and careless family members?

My mother in law’s dog was just recently diagnosed as diabetic. His blood sugar was unbelievably high!

He gets insulin shots twice a day, but when I took him to the vet today they said there was no change and they upped his insulin.

The reason, I think, is because he gets WAY too many treats, but my mother in law and the other people I live with won’t listen to me when I say he doesn’t need 50 treats a day.

He gets a treat everytime he goes outside. He gets treats for looking sad. He gets treats out of pity. He gets treats after his shots….and its not my dog so no one will listen to me when I say that its ridiculous to go through 3 packs of dog treats in a week.

Is there any way I can get them to understand that they are not helping his diabetes by feeding him high-sugar treats? Or what would be an alternative way to reward him for doing such menial tasks as peeing (its to the point now where if he doesn’t get a treat everytime he goes outside, he goes nuts)

Any recipes?

Likewise, are there any vet approved homemade diets for a diabetic dog? After reading the ingredients of his canned food I’m not so sure thats the best thing to feed him afterall….the first ingredient listed is corn, followed by soybean meal, and poultry byproduct.
The dog already went blind last year…probably from too many treats.

Oh my! Try this on them. Their dog will go blind if the insulin doesn’t start to work. Then they will have a blind and diabetic dog. If they aren’t careful with the diet, their dog can get other health issues from the immune deficiency. He can get Addisons Disease or Cushings Disease, which are very expensive to diagnose and just as difficult to treat.
We took good care of our dog and had her on a special diet. One day one of our other dogs knocked over the garbage can and she gorged on leftovers. Within 24 hours she was in the ER with acute Pancreantitis. They put her on all kinds of meds, but 24 hours after that we got a call from the vet asking us to hurry there. She was so doped up on morphine that she had no idea where she was or who we were, and she was literally screaming, and I mean SCREAMING in pain.
We put her down that day.

You can call your vet and ask him to have a blunt conversation with them about what will happen to the dog if they continue this irresponsible behavior.

Good diet and weight control are essential for the Insulin to work. If they don’t care how their dog suffers, you can always crack them in the side of the head!

Edit: Ask the vet about treats. We used slices of apple and all meat treats, such as duck or chicken breast. For food while she was still in jeopardy we cooked shedded chicken and white rice. After she was regulated on the Insulin, we switched her diet to a dog food with no fillers, by-products or preservatives. She did very well on that.

How much will Type 1 Diabetes cost me in health expenses in America?

I have Type 1 Diabetes and currently live in the United Kingdom, so my care is free. How much will health care/medication cost me in the United States, if I were to emigrate?

I would stay in the UK! It is outrageous living here in the US. I spend $9000 a year and I have great insurance.

My insulin copay per month is $38.
My other prescriptions are $40 a month.
Miscellaneous diabetic expenses cost me over $90 to $100 a month.
I visit my Endo doctor every 3 months at 10 buck a pop.
My cardiologist every 6 months costs me $25.
I’ve been in the ER twice this yr at $50 each time.
The foot doc twice a yr is $25 a visit.
Blood work every 3 months $100.
The diabetic clinic every 3 months $25
My pump supplies cost $50 every few months.
My insulin pump was 9 grand. I paid $50.
I spend a $10 copay per month for insurance.
The drug companies make a fortune on the Diabetics in the US.

How dangerous is it for my blood glucose level to be in the 500′s?

I just at some pizza for dinner and haven’t taken my insulin all day. I’m suffering from depression and it’s hard for me to have the will to take my insulin when necessary as I am a type 1 diabetic and I just found out I have diabetes type 1 10 months ago and I’m 21 years old and devestated. I talked to my doctor about this depression I’m having and they want me to see a couselor. In the mean time, I’m supposed to eat healthy and take the insulin they have specified, but I’m having a hard time dealing with it. So, id my blood glucose levels are in the 500′s….what could happen? I just took insulin to bring it down, but I need to know what to do right now.

just take your insulin and chat with someone who you trust and will do whats best for you until you can get some professional help and dont think that you are alone i have had type 1 for 22 years and some days i dont want to take my insulin either and get very depressed too but blood sugars in the 500′s is serious and you should go to the ER if that cant happen watch your blood sugar very close if not for you then do it for your little one
