South Beach Diet vs Atkins – which is best for diabetic person?

I have been doing Atkins for years and eating low carb. I now find it hard to stick to it. I realize "now" that I am eating tons of fat, butter, sour cream and heavy whipping cream for my coffee.

I have lost thirty pounds, but maybe not due to Atkins, but because I am taking a pill for diabetes that helped me lose weight.

I was reading about the South Beach Diet and it is similar to Arkins only we cannot eat all the fat. This is a harder diet to do because I would have to make certain meals where with Atkins it was just meat, fish, eggs, cheese and broccoli and asparagus .. and salad. I do not want to make a lot of recipes with the South Beach Diet – it just seems to hard to do.

I do not thoroughly understand why I can eat a lot of whole grains on a diet "when" they contain carbs. If I eat normal carbs I gain weight immediately. Whole grains slow down the GL, but I still don’t get it. I need to start a diet today and not sure which is best. Need to lose 40 pounds.

If I were to pick on I’d go for South Beach. Behind the scenes south beach is a low-GI (glycemic index) diet. It focuses on how long foods in your system take to metabolize into sugar in your system.

We’ve been on a low GI diet for about two years now. I didn’t have any weight to lose but its cleared up a couple of my health problems and my wife dropped 30lbs on it.

A lot of the whole grains, are less processed and therefore have more nutritional benefits then fully-processed foods. Also a lot of the whole grains help keep you regular.

What is the best FREE 1400 calorie diabetic diet to follow which affords a high rate of weight loss?

If you are a diabetic, please offer diet suggestions you’ve been successful with or offer suggestions from a close friend or relative who is a diabetic.

South Beach Diet, definitely. My husband and my brother are both diabetic and their doctors recommended the South Beach Diet. My husband lost the 20 pounds he needed to lose, my brother lost 60 pounds. It’s balanced and full of good, healthy foods. It’s not one of those obsessively low carb diets.

Both of them have had such awesome success with it that they are now able to control their diabetes strictly with diet and are off of all diabetes medications!

It’s totally free in that you prepare your own meals. You can check the book out from the library along with several South Beach cookbooks, and there are free South Beach support forums and communities on the internet.

Best of luck to you!

What is a good site to get diabetic recipes for a 15 year old?

My son is 15 and has diabetes since age 10. We are looking for new recipes that are easy and taste good. Can any one help? We have tried to keep the meals fairly low in salt due to his father has high blood pressure and it runs in his family. Thanks for the help

Pick up all of the South Beach Diet books. They are based on glycemic index and most of the recipes are fabulous. maybe not as good as the originals but considering the healthfulness of the recipes they are a GREAT trade off. to boot, they are mostly easy and require a reasonable amount of ingredients. But hey he’s 15, if he’s active just monitor his glucose levels and most things are not that bad. just keep him in range and then the long term effects of diabetes will be lessened. Oh, if your insurance covers it get a pump if he is not resistnt to it. I can not wait until the biofeedback pumps are out…………
