why would a person with hyperglycemia be at an increased risk for heart disease and kidney disease?

YES. Having high sugar content in your blood can damage and "furr up"/narrow your blood vessels. Small vessels like the ones that goes to supply blood to your heart and kidneys are especially prone. Your nerves will also suffer and your vision for example will go funny. So if you are a diabetic it is vital to have good control of your blood sugar to prevent all these damages from occurring inside your body. (I know it’s easier said than done). Possibly seek help from a dietitian?

What is the best all round blood glucose meter?

I happen to think the best is LifeScan’s UltraSmart. It’s small, has graphs, shows 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90 day readings, averages, stores health info, exercise times and intensity, foods – as calories, carbs, protein, fats – insulin, of course. These readings max out at 3000 readings! I also use their computer program and download readings for faxing to my doc. More than that, I’ve used LifeScan for the past 10-12 years. Excellent service – next day turn around for broken meter. And mine – nearly everyone I’ve had – reads within 1 or 2 of my doc’s blood draw results! I can’t ask for more – unless it’s fully auto and internal to by body. And that’s coming – YES.
